The 3D Art of Jason Christopher Hawk

Jason Hawk

I have worked in the realm of the two-dimensional for most of my artistic life, experimenting with painting, drawing and the different mediums of the printed image. Although I still paint and draw, recently I have found myself attracted by the possibilities found in three-dimensional work. While a painting can be imbued with life and vitality, there is something in the essence of a sculpture that I find to be infinitely more real and tangible; a sculpture occupies the same space as the viewer while a two-dimensional work is more like a window to some other place. No glass or wall or curtain separates the viewer from a sculpture, you can reach out and touch it. i now consider myself a sculptor, and I work mostly with metals, cast bronze, fabricated steel, cast iron and found metal parts to name a few. My process is both meticulous as well as organic, and I often find that my best work comes out when I surrender control and let the metal take the shape that it wants to take.
